Other Neighborhood Information
Are there other things I should
know about my area?
- If you have a child or children that are under 17 years of age, by law they are required to attend school.
- All children must have their vaccinations up to date according to South Carolina Department of Health standards.
- You must have a fishing license to fish in York County, South Carolina. You will be arrested if you are caught fishing without a license. You can purchase these licenses for $10 in most fishing supply stores.
- Due to the potential for rapid rise and fall of waters in the Catawba River (caused by scheduled releases from the Lake Wylie Dam), swimming and wading in the Catawba River is discouraged. Many people have drowned trying to swim in the river.
- The City of Rock Hill and the Upper Palmetto YMCA offer swim lessons to the general public.
- In Public Pools, you are not allowed to swim in street clothes, only swim apparel.
- To operate a business inside the city limits, you must have a business license. To operate your business out of your home is allowed with certain restrictions. If you are interested in working from home, check with the Planning Department of the City Of Rock Hill for the rules and regulations, and the required permits and licenses needed before you begin.
Most businesses cannot operate from a residence because of the impact it will have on the surrounding neighbors, and would be a determent to the public good. For, example, an automobile mechanic cannot work from a residence because of the fluids from the vehicles and the number of cars at a residence. - A Permit is required to construct any structure or to place a structure on any lot in the city limits.
- Be careful not to have objects in your yard with standing water as this can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes can carry diseases.
- Some areas in York County are within the 10 mile radius of our nuclear power plant, Catawba Nuclear Station. The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) of York County has an emergency plan ready in case an accident or incident should occur. If you have school aged children, each school has information to give to the families to explain what the procedure would be in case something should happen during school hours. You can get a copy of this in Spanish at your child’s school, at our ICYC or the EOC.
- If you hear sirens, tune to the local radio stations to find out what the sirens are for and follow the instructions they give. The sirens are tested every 3 months (January, April, July and October) on the first Tuesday at 11:50 a.m., so do not be alarmed if you hear them at this time.
